Abstract: Mathematical fluid dynamics is the rigorous study of the equations of fluid motion. In this talk, I will derive the Euler and the Navier-Stokes equations from basic laws of mechanics and some fairly simple assumptions on fluids. The amount of physics you need to know, if any, is minimal. These equations are widely used in applied mathematics, and pose some of the most challenging problems in PDE theory. I will discuss some simple consequences of them.
