Jan 25: This time only, I am pushing back the due date for hw1
on Webwork, to next Tuesday (Jan. 31). Some of you have joined
the class late, and others have had some trouble accessing the
system. Note, however, that hw2 has also been assigned, and is
due at the same time.

Prerequisites — Math 1823.
Textbook — Calculus (8th ed), by James Stewart, Cengage Learning, 2016. The recommended homework problems will come from this edition, but you may be able to get by with an earlier edition of this book if that is what you have. We will cover Chapters 4-8 in this course.
Grading — There will be weekly homework assigments (to be done via WebWork), weekly quizzes, three in-class midterm exams, and a comprehensive final exam. The grades will be weighted as follows:

Your grades will be posted regularly on D2L (http://learn.ou.edu). It is your responsiblity to monitor your own grades for accuracy. Any mistake should be reported to me or to your GA right away so it can be remedied.
Estimating your grade — (added 4/25/17) Since the final exam is worth 25%, roughly 75% of your grade has been determined at this point. If you want to estimate how you are doing, calculate your current grade as follows.
Find your Webwork percentage (out of 100), and divide by 10 to get a score out of 10 points. Then, find your quiz average (say, as a percentage) and divide by 20 to get a quiz score out of 5 points. Divide each of your midterm scores by 3 to get scores out of 20 points each. Add these up, and you have your score out of 75.
At this point you can figure out what you need on the final to get the grade you are looking for. Also, if you multiply your score by 100/75, you will get your current grade out of 100. The grade scale will tell you what you have.
WebWork — For this class, you will have weekly assignments to be done on the web using a facility called WebWork.
WebWork is a web-based homework system designed espicially for mathematics. Its purpose is to give instant feedback as to the correctness of your answers. If your answer is not correct, you may redo the problem as many times as needed until the closing time of the assignment.
Every week, I will assign 15 to 25 problems through WebWork. The assignment will be available on Monday, and its closing time will be the Tuesday of the following week at 11:59pm. Note that, since WebWork is a computer program, it will not be possible to submit any answers past the closing time under any circumstances.
Each problem will be worth 1 to 3 points. WebWork will keep track of your scores and you will have access to the statistics. Your total on WebWork assignments will count for 10% of your final grade.
There will be a training assignment for you to adapt to the WebWork interface. This assignment will not have a closing date and it will not affect your grade.
The WebWork interface makes it convenient for you to email questions regarding specific problems in the assignment. The GA for your discussion section is in charge of answering these emails. The GA has limited time for this particular class and may not be able to answer your question right away. You are ultimately responsible for your own assignment, independently of whether the GA was able to help you on time. In order to prevent an overflow of emails, I am enforcing the following policy: any email sent after 6pm on the closing date of the assignment will be ignored.

Quizzes — During your discussion class each week your GA will administer a 10 minute quiz at the beginning of class. The quiz will go over material covered from the previous week. Your three lowest quiz scores will be dropped, so there will be no make-ups under any circumstance.
Exams — There will be three midterm exams during the course, given during the regular lecture time. All exams must be taken at the scheduled times, except in extraordinary circumstances. In such cases you should get in touch with me as soon as possible, preferably before the exam. Do not arrange travel plans that conflict with these dates.
The final exam will be held at the time shown below, in a location to be determined. University regulations require that it be held at this time.

Calculators — Calculators will not be needed, or allowed, during exams. Otherwise, you are welcome to use them as you see fit when studying for the class or working on problems.
Math Center — The Math Center (http://www.ou.edu/content/cas/mathcenter.html) provides free help for students of Math 2423. It is located in PHSC 209. I recommend giving them a try if you have questions on your homework.

Withdrawl and Incomplete grades — Please review the University's grading regulations (http://www.ou.edu/content/recordsandtranscripts/grading_policy.html) governing the grades of Withdrawl (W) and Incomplete (I). Academic honesty — All cases of suspected academic misconduct will be referred to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences for prosecution under the University's Academic Misconduct Code. Religious Holidays — It is the policy of the University to excuse the absences of students that result from religious observances and to provide without penalty for the rescheduling of examinations and additional required class work that may fall on religious holidays. If you plan to observe a religious holiday notify the instructor as soon as possible in order to make appropriate arrangements.
