Section 4 Grading Rubrics

One of the following categories will be applied to each problem on graded quizzes.

Subsection EXCELLENT

I completely demonstrated the strategy and mathematical operations to be used, and I used them correctly and efficiently.

  • I did all of my calculations correctly.

  • My work shows my process and reasoning while I worked the problem.

  • My strategy makes sense and is easy for someone else to follow.

  • I followed through with my strategy from beginning to end.

  • My work was clear and organized.

  • My answer was well thought out and reasonable.

  • My solution strategy was efficient.

Subsection PASS +

I completely demonstrated the strategy and mathematical operations to be used, but one small issue kept me from an excellent rating.

  • My thought process was presented correctly and understandable, but I incorrectly copied part of my work from one step to the next, which directly caused my answer to be incorrect.

  • I followed through with my strategy from beginning to end, and basically identified the correct answer, but I didn’t completely follow the directions.

  • I rounded incorrectly, my answer was not in simplified form, or I did not label my final answer.

  • One minor calculation error kept me from finding the correct answer to a complex problem.

Subsection PASS

I demonstrated the strategy and mathematical operations to be used, but a few minor errors kept me from completing the problem correctly.

  • My work lacks some minor elements that would have made my thought process easy for anyone to follow.

  • My thought process was correct but a few minor (calculation or procedural) errors kept me from getting the correct answer.

  • I made one or more calculation errors that significantly impacted the result of the problem, but my work still demonstrates complete understanding around the learning objective.

Subsection PASS -

I used an appropriate strategy and mathematical operations that worked for most of the problem.

  • I began the work correctly but did not complete all steps of the problem correctly.

  • My work isn’t detailed enough to demonstrate complete understanding of the strategy I used.

  • My work includes evidence of at least one area of confusion related to the strategy for solving the problem.

Subsection REVIEW

I attempted the problem with related tools but did not have an overarching strategy.

  • I tried several things related to the learning objective(s), but the attempts did not tie into an effective, appropriate strategy.

  • The separate parts of my solution were disconnected or unrelated.

  • I used mathematical operations correctly but they did not connect to an overall strategy.

  • My answer is unreasonable.

Subsection REVIEW -

I attempted the problem with unrelated tools and, as a result, didn’t demonstrate much understanding.

  • I set up the problem with the given information but could not get any further in the process.

  • I tried several things, but none logically relate to the learning objective(s).

  • My work wasn’t detailed or organized enough to help someone else follow my thinking.

Subsection BLANK/NO EVIDENCE

I wrote down information that was unrelated to the learning objective(s), and the grader was unable to identify any understanding from that work.

  • I didn’t demonstrate that I knew how to begin.

  • My answer is correct, but none of the work on my paper supports that answer.

  • I provided no evidence of understanding.
