Math 2443 - 008 Calculus & Analytic Geometry IV
Spring 2014
Course Handouts and Information
- The class meets MWF 12:30-1:20pm in 359 PHSC.
- Information Sheet (final version)
- Finding the equation of the tangent plane to the differentiable function f(x,y) at the point (a,b,f(a,b)). This method seems to be more involved than the one outlined in the textbook, but it has the advantage that it reminds us about some important calc 3 concepts; namely, parametric curves and tangent vectors, cross products, and normal vectors. We will use these concepts often in this course, so it is good to see them again now.
- Joel Louwsma (another 2443 instructor) is holding a weekly "2443 Action Center" on Mondays, 6pm-7:30pm in 240 Wagner Hall.
You are encouraged to attend. The focus is on problem solving.
- Final office hour. Monday 9am-10am in 521PHSC.
Messages
- We are using the 7th edition of the textbook,
Calculus by James Stewart, Brooks/Cole, 2012.
- The first Webwork assignment is now available.
Here is a description of how to logon to the webwork server and to get started with the first assignment.
The due dates of webwork assignments will be listed below (below the written Homework list).
- Joel Louwsma (another 2443 instructor) is holding a weekly "2443 Action Center" on Mondays, 6pm-7:30pm in 240 Wagner Hall.
You are encouraged to attend. The focus is on problem solving.
- Detailed solution to Q53 from the chain rule section.
- Midterm I (in class on Friday 02/14) covers all of chapter 14 (partial derivatives) except for 14.8 (Lagrange multipliers).
- Class on Wed 02/12 is review. Look here for old midterms.
- Here are some solutions to selected problems from the most recent homework. Should help in reviewing for the midterm.
- Solutions to Midterm I.

- Remember that Midterm II takes place in class on Friday 03/15.
It covers section 14.8 (Lagrange multipliers) in addition to all of chapter 15 (multiple integrals).
Here are some links to past exams (you should look at Mid II and Mid III exams): Spring 2000 and Spring 2009.
- Here is a sheet that will be available for you to use with Midterm II. It will be attached to Midterm II.
- Some solutions to selected problems from the most recent hwk.
- Solutions to Midterm II.
- Old notes on line integrals.
- Notes on conservative vector fields.
- Notes on vector fields in 2-dimensions.
- Notes on grad, curl and div.
- Midterm III takes place in class on Friday April 18. Here is a link to two past midterm III exams.
Please note that our exam will not include questions about change of variables in triple integrals (Q1 on the two linked midterms).
- Here are solutions to selected problems from Hw 20.
- Some notes summarizing (and elaborating) on class discussions of Stokes' Theorem, the Divergence Theorem, and vector and scalar potentials.
- Here are some old final exams from past courses: old final 1, and old final 2.
- Here are some notes on developing an intuition about the Laplacian, and
some notes on formulas for div, grad, curl, and the Laplacian in general orthogonal curvilinear coordinates.
You will not be examined on these two handouts. However, if ever you take a course on thermodynamics, fluids, or EM fields, you will need to be very comfortable with these ideas.
- Here are solutions to Mid III.
- Here are notes from the discussion of the proof of Stokes' and Divergence theorems.
- Here is a PDF of the handout on Fund Theorem of Path Integrals, Greeen's Thm, Stokes' Thm, and the Divergence Thm in class. It offers one way of organizing the material in your head.
- Here is the sheet that will be provided with the final examination.
- Solutions to the final.
