Noncommutative geometry, differential operators, and rigidity of manifolds

Abstract: Solutions to differential equations on a manifold can often tell us a great deal about the shape of this manifold. I will give a brief account of how noncommutative geometry follows this theme to tackle some prominent problems in differential topology and differential geometry, in particular, the Novikov conjecture and the positive scalar curvature problem.
