Abstract: Geometric group theory is the study of groups using the topology and geometry of the spaces that they act on. In this talk, we will take a geometric perspective to prove that \(SL_2(\mathbb{Z})\) is finitely generated. By analyzing this proof, we will discuss a generalization that leads to a geometric characterization of finite generation.
