Abstract: In the 1550 edition of the book De Subtililate, by the Italian mathematician Girolamo Cardano, there is a problem about monks who have orders from God to move a set of gold disks. When the monks complete the task, the world will end. Cardano asks simply "Why?". The problem surprisingly has a mathematical answer. In this talk we will solve Cardono's problem and discover various ways of looking at it involving graphs, automata, and geometric series.
