Abstract: In this talk I will discuss the interplay between curvature lower bounds, symmetry, and topology. In particular, I will focus on how isometric circle and torus actions can be used to "recognize" the topology of a closed manifold (a higher-dimensional analogue of a surface in Euclidean 3-space) with a lower curvature bound. Numerous examples will be included.
