Professor Gerard Walschap earned a doctorate from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1987. After an appointment as E. R. Hedrick Assistant Professor at UCLA, he joined the OU Mathematics Faculty as an Assistant Professor in 1990, and was promoted to Associate Professor in 1993 and to Professor in 1999. His research area is Riemannian geometry, Lie groups, and applications of differential geometry to general relativity. He has published over 40 works, including two research monographs, Metric Structures in Differential Geometry (Graduate Texts in Mathematics, Springer, 2004) and Metric Foliations and Curvature (with Detlef Gromoll, Birkhäuser, 2009), as well as an undergraduate textbook, Multivariable Calculus and Differential Geometry (De Gruyter, 2015). He supervised three doctoral students at OU. Professor Walschap retired in 2015.
