Abstract: The study of the word problem for finitely presented groups led to the definition of a "Dehn function," which has itself become a subject of independent study. One fundamental class of groups whose Dehn functions were intently studied for decades is that of the Stallings-Bieri groups; these were eventually proven to all have quadratic Dehn functions. In this talk, we will generalize this result to show that any coabelian subgroup of a direct product of groups, each of whose Dehn functions is at most quadratic (which encompasses the Stallings-Bieri groups), itself has a quadratic Dehn function. This talk is based on Kropholler and Llosa Isenrich's paper "Dehn functions of coabelian subgroups of direct products of groups".
