Abstract: In this talk, we build on the ideas explored in the paper “Analyzing the Nature of University Students’ Difficulties with Algebra in Calculus: Students’ Voices during Problem Solving”. Building on some results in this paper, we explore how school algebra is intertwined in limits. We have designed a preliminary lesson plan enhanced with specific resources to teach limits in Calculus I courses while highlighting both calculus and algebra. We anticipate that these resources result in naturally born academic standards that highlight the use of algebra in calculus. Our newly created standards are heavily inspired by the Oklahoma Academic Standards, which guide mathematics curriculum in Oklahoma’s K-12 public school system. In addition, these resources can be used in future research to investigate students’ difficulties with algebra in limits in Calculus I courses.
