Departmental Awards and Scholarships

The Mathematics Department gives awards and scholarships to graduate students based on their academic performance, teaching, and citizenship. Below you can find a list of these awards, including a description of each award and recent awardees.

Academic Achievement Award

This award was established in 1998 using Mathematics Department Development funds. This award is made by the Chair of Mathematics on the recommendation of the Mathematics Graduate Committee and recognizes Mathematics graduate students who have excelled in academic achievement.

Harold Huneke Endowed Fund Award

This fund was established in 1986. It is in honor of Dr. Harold Huneke, David Ross Boyd professor of Mathematics, an outstanding educator who received several teaching awards during his tenure at OU. It is also in memory of Dr. Huneke's wife, Opal Harral-Huneke. Recipients should be graduate students in Mathematics who are in good academic standing and the award is based on their performance as graduate student assistants.

Richard V. Andree Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 1988 to honor the memory of Dr. Richard V. Andree who served University of Oklahoma for many years as a distinguished Professor of Mathematics and supporter and promoter of mathematics and computer science programs. This award is to support creative students of Mathematics in recognition of their academic excellence, department and university citizenship, and activity in support of Pi Mu Epsilon.

Harold Huneke Endowed Scholarship

This fund was established in 1992 and is in honor of Dr. Harold Huneke who received his PhD from OU in 1957, taught Mathematics at OU from 1960 through 1981, and who was recognized as a David Ross Boyd Professor because of his excellent teaching. This scholarship recognizes outstanding doctoral students in Mathematics who plan a career in college or university teaching.

John Clark Brixey Graduate Scholarship

This fund was established in 1993 and is in honor of John C. Brixey, Sr. (1904-1989), former professor of Mathematics at the University of Oklahoma. The purpose of this scholarship is to aid the University of Oklahoma in attracting and retaining outstanding doctoral students in Mathematics.

Conrad and Ellen Masterson Fellowship in Mathematics

This fund was established in 2019 by Conrad and Ellen Masterson. The purpose of this fellowship is to promote excellence in graduate study in mathematics with a special emphasis on support for original research. Recipients must be regularly enrolled doctoral students in the Mathematics Department with a GPA of 3.0 or above.

C. Eugene Springer Mathematics Scholarship

This fund was established in 1989 in honor of Dr. C. Eugene Springer, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics. Dr. Springer was a Rhodes scholar who taught at the University for 41 years prior to his retirement in 1974. An internationally known expert in Differential Geometry, Dr. Springer also served the Department as chairman. Springer Scholars must exhibit outstanding potential in mathematics and plan a career in the mathematical sciences.

Nancy Scofield Hester Mathematics Scholarship

Mrs. Hester established this fund, as well as the Nancy Hester Presidential Professorship in the OU Department of Mathematics, in 2010. Nancy Scofield Hester graduated from the University of Oklahoma in the mid 1960’s with a degree in mathematics. The scholarship was established to assist graduate or undergraduate students who are making satisfactory progress toward graduation, and need supplemental financial assistance.
