Sand Plum (Prunus angustifolia). This tree, native to the United States, was cultivated by Native Americans before the arrival of Europeans. It grows wild in sandy soil in open woodland and prairies. There is even a cultivated sand plum orchard in Oklahoma where you can pay to pick your own. This August, we found a little tree growing near the road in our neighborhood -- the plums were a little bitter to my taste, but I think they would make a jam everyone would like.
